September 2010 Review

From The Rector
The Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit has become a regular feature of leadership development at Crinken. Churches always feel that we could do with more leaders, which means that we have to be pro-active about how we encourage and develop leaders in our churches. We have found the GLS to be a fantastic way of doing just that.

Willow Creek is a church in the suburbs of Chicago, led by Bill Hybels. Over the last 20 years Hybels has had a profound effect upon the development of the Christian church in the United States, and indeed across the globe. In recent years they have held an annual leadership conference in Chicago that brings together some of the greatest thinkers and practitioners in leadership from around the world. The GLS is held in August of each year, and is then shown in ‘live sites’ around the world. Last year it was held in about 350 cities across the globe, and attended by over 120,000 leaders! In November 2010 it will be the third time that the GLS has been held in Dublin. The talks are shown on a large video screen, although every else that happens is ‘live’. At first one wonders if this is going to feel strange, but very quickly one realises that it is fine.

Speakers this year include people that you may have heard of, and people that you won’t have. Hybels himself is on the platform, as is T.D Jakes, pastor of one of America’s largest African American churches. Jim Collins is a world famous author and teacher in the area of business leadership, and Jack Welch is the former CEO of General Electric. This year I am particularly interested in hearing Zhao Xiao, a Chinese economist who has some fascinating insights into the development of the church in China and the profound shift to the ‘Global South’ that is having such a huge effect on the Christian church (not least of all the Anglican communion).

If you are interested, the GLS is held at the Exchange, 50 Gardiner St Lower, Dublin 1 on November 10th and 11th. We have found it particularly effective because quite a number of people from our church have attended in past years, and this has created a ground swell of interest and excitement about leadership in our church. Teenstreet
TeenStreet is a christian youth event which happens each summer in Germany run by Operation Mobilisation (OM). Over a packed week in July, 15 teenagers and 4 leaders from Crinken enjoyed lots of fun activities and great bible teaching from Psalm 23 taught with very creative means. We learnt about David’s heart for God, how he was able to say that he wanted nothing because the Lord was his God and his shepherd who was always with him. He is always with us too and before returning home we were encouraged to seek God first every day. In the evenings in the ‘Throne Room’ meetings the band led us to worship God through music. We did this to give God glory because he is always worthy of our praise and not just when we feel like it. It was a great week where each of us got to spend quality time with God, praying and reading our bibles and for some of us, beginning a relationship with our heavenly father for the first time.

Crinken Kids
Crinken Kids Club will be starting back mid September with a bang (as per usual) we will be running at a new look time in a new look way. But as ever we will be having much fun, as we use sports, drama, craft, messy games and a little bit of music as we spend time getting to know one another and God. For more information see the church website (http://www.crinken.com).

Crinken Kids programme on Sunday morning, has officially done away with teachers, books and those dirty looks, so we are officially no longer a “Sunday School” after all we have been as School all week!!! Crinken Kids is all about helping kids know Jesus and follow him, be it on a club night or a Sunday. We kick off our new look Crinken Kids Programme in October…but never fear come September we will be still meeting Sunday Mornings.

Young@Heart
On Sunday 8th August the Young@Heart spent a lovely afternoon in the home of Stephen & Lindsey Gardiner. After a delicious meal, we all adjourned to the garden for coffee. The company was good, the garden looking wonderful and the sun shone throughout the day! It was a great afternoon to meet together and enjoy the opportunity of good conversation and catching up. A big thank you to Stephen & Lindsey for their hospitality and kindness.

Exam Results
Congratulations to all those who did so well in their recent Leaving Certificate exams. This is an exciting time for our young folk as they contemplate the direction of their careers and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they embark on this journey.
